Marriage Priority One…Date Night!

Laundry, errands, work, school, kids, cleaning, friends, sleep… many things are competing for your very precious time each week, it’s really difficult to make your relationship a priority.

I know, I know….you’re tired, stressed and hanging on by a thread, but making your relationship a priority among the list of “to-do’s” will have en enormous pay-off. Relationships are an ever living, breathing thing, they are always growing and changing. So, to keep them alive, you need to feed them. We feed our relationships by giving them focus and time.

Your spouse will thank you, your kids will have happier parents, your relationship will be more lighthearted and connected. You will “get” one another better.

Pick a night each week or at least once a month that you set aside to spend alone. Have kids? Identify someone who can babysit so you can pay attention to your significant other.  Dont’ forget to check out SitterCity to help you find a regular babysitter.  Older kids? Set up a sleepover with friends.  Low on budget? Swap babysitting with another couple so you can each have regular date nights. Or enlist friends and family into helping to make this a priority.

Date night doesn’t have to be expensive either….get creative!

  • Hit your local pub for a beer and a round of darts.
  • Sign-up for Netflix and watch the latest movies snuggled up at home.
  • Set the table and cook or grill dinner together at home.
  • Go retro and go bowling.
  • Create your own night in Vegas by playing an animated game of Texas Hold’em.

Or, if you’re like my husband and I, go for a walk together a few times a week to catch up on our day and conspire to make plans for the future.

So, make your relationship a priority and don’t skimp on the date nights. You’ll feel happier, more connected, more grounded and more easily able to navigate the treadmill of life’s ever growing list of responsibilities….

What do you do to stay connected? Tell us about it….

My problem is that my husband doesn’t like to DO anything. He hates the movies, bars, bowling, camping, going to dinner with friends, etc… About the only thing I can get him to do is go to dinner with me once a month. Although he truly doesn’t mind when I do all these other things with friends (both male and female), I want to do them with HIM. Any hints?
